PSEUDO ECHO
Dream Nightclub, Melbourne
7th October, 2005

On Friday 7th October I attended the Pseudo Echo show at Dream Nightclub.

Being a die hard Pseudo Echo fan this is certainly not the first time I have seen the Pseud's. I was so excited as it was a proper Pseudo Echo show and not another Idols concert. I hadn't seen a solo Pseudo Echo show since a few years back so I was rather thrilled.

From walking into the venue the vibe was great! People were dancing to the sounds of Kim Wilde, Dead or Alive, Divine and more, and I was very pleased indeed as James Leigh was mingling in the crowd. I had wanted to meet James since I was a little lad in 1985 so after 20 years I was very happy and James was absolutely lovely.

Brian came up to me just before Pseudo were about to hit the stage and we had a nice little chat so that was an added bonus. The show started at about midnight and as usual they did not disappoint!

I have said it time and time again and I will ay it again, Pseudo Echo really do sound so unbelievable live full of energy and spark. The synths, electric drums, Brian's vocals and guitar are so raw live and simply outstanding. There is no mistaking the Pseudo sound ever!!!

Their set started off with Autumnal Park, the B-side to A Beat For You which is a brilliant instrumental to have opened the show. They then in full swing banged out the fabulous Stranger In Me which is always a great opening live track. Then they went into a huge favourite of mine which I was hoping to see live Lies Are Nothing from the Love an Adventure album. It sounded big and made everyone want to dance!

It was so amazing to see James Leigh play keys on Lies Are Nothing and all the Love an Adventure tracks they performed, as James had so much do with the involvement and growth of that album as it was his first piece of work with the band. Following Lies Are Nothing was the ever so infectious In Their Time, the B-side to Listening which is always nice to see live. Following this was Don't Go which was lovely as Brian Canham told the story of how this was the first Pseudo Echo single with James Leigh as part of the band replacing Tony Lugton. Brian told us how James Leigh played the original idea and demo form of Don't Go at his nice synth studio and how Brian loved it! Brian said on stage "James had a huge hit with his first single"!

Brian then said that he certainly didn't have a first hit from the stuff he wrote from his first attempt at song writing!

Next up was one of my absolute stand out tracks from the brilliant Autumnal Park, Dancing until Midnight. Brian introduced this track as their New Romantic ballad, which I adored! Following this was the ultimate moment of the show for myself and friend Maryanne. They finally performed His Eyes from Autumnal Park and also featured in US 80s film Friday The 13th Part V. We were totally over the moon and I had never seen Pseudo Echo perform His Eyesâ so I was soaking up every minute of it and enjoyed it immensely! A Beat for You was next and is always now and forever going to be a Pseudo Echo classic and it always shines when performed live, the crowd of course all went mad to this track. The energetic Living In A Dream and Fast Cars was next and Brian told the story of how this track was written about them at the time and how they all wanted to buy snazzy 80s white cars with the success they were going to enjoy.

Following this was the every so fabulous Destination Unknown which works so very well live and Pierre's bass synth sounded like perfection as per usual! Always such a great live track that gets the whole place up and dancing. A little treat was next with Brian introducing David Sterry of Real Life up on the stage and introducing David with Pseudo Echo playing Real Life's first smash single from 1983 Send Me An Angel. The crowd went mad and David sounded brilliant and Pseudo sounded just like Real Life which was very amusing!

Listening was up next which is always special to see live as it was my first exposure of the band and the first OZ single I bought in 1983 and of course their first hit! Thanks to Countdown and of course for being an amazing synth pop record.

Brian said "There you have it, 2 Australian New Romantic hits from Real Life and The Pseud's", GREAT!!!!! I of course appreciated that immensely. The epic Love an Adventure was next up which sounded so big, amazing and full of charisma. People of course went crazy to this track, and once again it was fabulous to see James play keys again!

Last up was the what you would call the predictable moment of the huge cover track they did in 1986 Funky Town. Though not a huge fan of this track, it sounds good live, and they mixed it in with New Order's Blue Monday and also mixed in Duran Duran's Girls On Film! Brian asked a bunch of girls to get up on stage to Girls on Film and it was fantastic and a great way to end such an awesome show.

The whole performance was so fantastic and a thrill to witness. What was so special about this show was the fact that there were hardcore Pseudo Echo fans there, and Brian said how he loved this show as it reminded him of their very early gigs when they used to perform at only 2 clubs in Melbourne every week, long before they got signed and had hits. He said that the crowd was like the the original type they had in the very early days before they started experimenting and changing their sound as time went on, which was mesmerizing to hear!. Brian was very pleased and of course, so were we.

Pseudo Echo proved they were back to their true fine form and showed yet again they are the synth kings of Australia!

We love you Pseudo, u guys were deluxe!
