2003 - Duran Duran - Live at The Metro
Tuesday - Dec 9th, 2003
On Tuesday 9th December, 2003 a long time dream of mine finally came to life! Duran Duran in the flesh live on stage in 2003 at Metro Nightclub in Melbourne with the 5 original members Nick Rhodes, Simon Le Bon, John Taylor, Roger Taylor and Andy Taylor. The show was simply superb, energetic and plain amazing.

Simon Le Bon sounded fantastic as did the whole band and they performed just as good all together as they did in the 80’s if not better. They covered many of their hits from 'Planet Earth' which sounded so amazing and strong and still always so ahead of it’s time. 'Wild Boys' was also certainly one of the most energetic moments of the show and the many keyboards played by the genius of Nick Rhodes and great drums from Roger Taylor just sounded so big like the song is. 'Girls On Film' was also one of the highlights with a very special mix of the 7” version and 12” mixed together which was truly fabulous! Another one of those moments in a live situation when a song just comes to life was 'Careless Memories' which was just perfect in every way and took everyone straight back to 1981! Just superb!!!

Also a very special performance for me was 'Come Undone' which Simon sang beautifully and Andy played very passionately. And the other added ballads showed Simon’s voice off brilliantly with 'Save A Prayer' which also featured Simon playing acoustic guitar on this number and the very passionate performance of 'Ordinary World'. 'Notorious' was also one of those moments that was fantastic and through the performance of this track I really have found a new respect for it as it was performed so well. Simon started off by saying “As James Brown would say, it’s got to be funky!” and they also mixed Sister Sledge’s 'We Are Family' in the middle of 'Notorious' and people went wild as it sounded so clever. And of course, 'Rio' was fabulous and the added saxophone work on this was spectacular. Luckily they also performed some of my favourite album tracks which put a very big smile on my face with the opening number 'Friends Of Mine' from the 1981 debut album. The opening moody keyboards from the brilliantly talented Nick Rhodes slowly built up and really got everybody excited as the room felt so electric. Also the guitar and bass work from Andy Taylor and John Taylor was phenomenal on this track. Also taken off the first album was 'Nightboat' and the performance of this was simply spectacular, full of mood and charm with the lights turning purple on the stage for this song which just complimented the song perfectly.

Then there was the brilliant 'New Religion' which was one of THE highlights of the night for me as the harmonies and the intro and John Taylor’s prominent bass was absolutely fantastic! And this track also had great lights being red on the stage with the intro which also just complimented the song perfectly. They also performed 2 new tracks including 'What Happens Tomorrow' and 'Beautiful Colours' which were absolutely great. The new tracks feature a lot of guitars so they are very rock and they are also obviously very catchy and are simply just great pop songs, in particular 'Beautiful Colours' which I thoroughly enjoyed.
